I Throw Myself At Men

I Throw Myself At Men is a fascinating project by performance artist Lilly McElroy, in which she literally throws herself at men. Its a really interesting comment on our society and dating.

in her own words:

For this project I went to a lot of bars and I literally threw myself at men who I didn't know. I used my body as a projectile, hurling myself toward strong, vulnerable men who were waiting to catch me. Poised in a perpetual state of social awkwardness and in full possession of the ability to subvert stereotypical gender roles, the photographs pose questions concerning relationships, social connection, sex, gender, and the desire to form relationships quickly that are both intense and long lasting. The project initially started after I placed ads on Craigslist.org looking for men who would meet me blind date style in bars and allow me to throw myself at them. This project comes from a place where the desire to make a positive connection with another person is coupled with the knowledge that a connection might not be possible, that the person might not catch me.

Terminally Illin'

Last week this arrived in the post, and I have never been so excited to read a comic book in my life!

Terminally Illin' is the brainchild of Kaylin Andres, a fellow Cancer patient who's blog CANCER IS HILARIOUS provided me with many laughs when I myself was going through Chemo.

The comic was entirely funded on Kickstart, an American website were people can fund projects, the same as Ireland's FundIt.ie...

I donated $20, I know its not a a lot, but at the time I was a poor 22 year old Cancer patient, but my 20 dollar donation did get me a thank you on the Terminally Illin' VIP page. I'm honoured to be able to help this amazing project in any small way that I can!

Feel the Burren!

So lately my friend Jennifer have decided that 2012 is the year we get fit, and not just Wii Fit, actually fit! And seeing as we have the wonderful Burren at our doorstep, we decided to take full advantage of it last weekend and we ventured up on the Mullach Mor hike...

I took about 4 hours, and we stopped for lunch at the peak... but the views are really unlike anywhere else, and its a great workout, you can definitely feel the Burn when climbing up the Burren!

On the way home we stopped by this famous house, Im sure most people will recognize it!

Never Judge a book by its Cover!

They say never judge a book by its cover, but on this occasion I think it is fair to judge away, because these two books look fantastic!

Both covers were designed by Street Artist Shepard Fairey, famous for his Obey posters, and his Obama HOPE campaign poster.

I read Animal Farm one Sunday afternoon and I really enjoyed it, its crazy to think that a book that was written nearly 60 years ago could be so relevant today.

As for 1984, I shall hold off on reading that for a while, it seems like an intense read, so maybe when I'm feeling more bookish I'll read it.

So last night Saturday me and my Da organised a surprise party for my Mother's 50th. Her birthday isn't until February, so thats were the surprise part came in!

And if anyone has organised a surprise party, you'll know how stressful it is. Stealing my Mam's phone, copying numbers, calling people out of the blue, hanging up on them when my Mother walked into the room, convincing her to come out at the arranged time, making sure that no one lets the surprise slip. And then theres the cake, the decorations, hiring the band, getting the venue, and the crowd all in the same place by Ten o' clock on a sleepy Saturday night in November!

All the worry, stress and panic was all more than worth it when my Mother walked into the pub and about 100 of her friends and family all ROARED surprise! If anyone has seen The Help yet (highly recommended by the way) it was just like the final Church scene in that film! Mam started clapping along and asked "Why we clapping?".

It was a tremendous night, great food, great people, great band (The wonderful Trevor Handsbury) and just a great night in general!

So Happy Birthday to my amazing mother, and heres to another 50!

Phill Jupitus. Funny Man?

Hello blog buddies, how is everyone this Friday? Its another cold & wet day here in Ireland.

On Wednesday night I was in Galway, doing some work on The Lid, a new Irish Arts Magazine that a friend and I have started. More news on that to follow. Seeing as we were in Galway and had nothing to do, Ciara & I decided to check out some comedy at the Roisin Dubh, one of the most laid back venues in Galway.

Phill Jupitus was headlining, with new material fresh from his Edinburgh show. Phil mostly DJs now, and does the odd bit of Who Line Is It Anyways style improve, but the show was straight up stand up. And it was terrible! He seemed to have no passion at all for what he was doing, or the audience for that matter. He seemed drunk, or high, or possibly both. It was just a long drawn out 40 minutes of shouting, jokes about his daughters virginity, and him generally being obnoxious and listing out all the things he doesn't like.

Support on the night came from the equally terrible Gerry Mallon, who admittedly was trying out new material, or so he said he was. We suspected that this was a meer excuse for his boring, and frankly depressing routine. Which was predominately taken up by talk of his ex-wife and divorce. Suddenly what was meant to be a night of comedy turn a horrible turn into self pity and what seemed like a therapy session.

The MC for the night was Ian Coppinger, who started off okay, warming up the audience with the usual audience interrogation, where are you from, what do you do in college. It was all going well until he made an ill judged and unfunny joke about Dublin's Front Lounge gay bar, which he suggested should be renamed The Back Door. This was met with complete silent from the audience. It was an awkward moment, and he never really got the audience back after that comment, which surprised me, I thought there would be a few fools in the audience that would appreciate a dumb gay joke, but to my pleasant surprise, no one thought it was funny. A progressive Ireland? Maybe. I think it had more to do with the fact that it was just a lame joke. Who can say?

The highlight of the night came in the form of a Hot Chicken Roll. Halfway through Phill's rantings, all I could focus on was how numb my arse had gotten from the uncomfortable bar stools, and how hungry I was. I spent the next 20 minutes fantasising about how a Hot Chicken Roll from Centra would be a million times better than this comedy... so as soon as Phill slurred "Galway, thanks for hav..." I grabbed my coat in one had, Ciara in the other, and we bolted for the nearest deli!

Maybe myself & Ciara just too sober for the show (Alcohol is a very important part of stand-up) or maybe the three performers were just having a bad night. Or maybe, they really are just crap, and I wasted €12.50. I could have brought 3 more Hot Chicken Rolls and a Freddo bar for that. Sigh.

Immortals Premiere in Dublin

Last Friday I was invited to the Irish Premiere of Immortals, Tarsem Singh's latest visually captivation release. But like Singh's other visual masterpieces, The Cell, and The Fall, the story is somewhat lacking, and has problems with pacing. All the action takes place in the final 30 minutes, and while the stunning sets, costumes, make up and effects will keep you entertained through out, the build up is quite slow.

Former Home & Away Aussie actress Isabell Lucus is captivating, and perfectly cast as Goddess Athena, while Twilight star Kellen Lutz, and Luke Evans provide the muscle in their roles as Gods Poseidon and Zeus.

The mortals are also convincing in their roles, Henry Cavill is the Hero Theseus, Mickey Rourke plays to his villainous strengths as the evil King Hyperion, and Frida Pinto rounds off the impressive ensemble as the Seer Phaedra.

Like I said earlier Tarsem's films are not know for their intricate plots, or he is not known for brilliant storytelling or fine direction. To me, Tarsem is an artist first, and a director second. Each and every scene in the movie could be paused and printed as a one of a kind masterpiece. The costumes are stunning, rich golds for the Gods, malicious head wear for Hyperion's army, and the locations look lush and epic.

While with most films of late, the 3D is completely unnecessary and at times distracting, and only every used to full effect in the film's final moments.

Overall though I enjoyed the movie a lot, for all if faults in the story, the action on screen is unlike anything you will have seen in a long time. While it may not stimulate your brain, it is certainly a feast for the eyes, and I left the cinema with many unforgeable images lodged in my mind.

the next day while having a look around Grafton me and my boyfriend Pa went into Tower Records where Camille O'Sullivan was performing a live set at the back of the store. She sounds so incredible live, at first we thought it was a CD playing as we browsed around the story, only to see the woman herself on stage. She was performing as part of Movember's day of musical acts in Tower Records.

Before we heading back to Ennis we had time for a stop in YO Sushi! Im pretty sure that this place is Pa's favourite restaurant in the entire city, and I am becoming a Sushi converter too. The firecracker chicken and the deep fried squid are becoming my YO Sushi favourites.

before beginning the FIVE HOUR BUS TRIP home, I had just enough time to run into BT to start my Christmas shopping. A fantastic weekend in Dublin was definitely had by all.

On Friday I was up in Mayo with mates Pa, Pat and Fergal, where my mate Emer has a great Halloween party. Then on Sunday I made my way up to Galway, to see Dylan Moran, as part of the Galway Comedy Festival. His show was funny, but equally random and frantic, half the time I literally had no idea what he was talking about. Still, we all had a laugh, no I won't complain.

So week I was sent a press release invite thing from the Dublin Contemporary. Over the past three years of running the blog I've gotten my fair share of press releases, (its very exciting at first, but once you have Black & Decker telling you about their latest range of power tools, the magic kinda wares off). That was until I read the email from the Dublin Contemporary, inviting me to The Art of Fashion, a conversation with Aoife Wasser & Linda Brownlee. The more I read the more fascinated I became, so I decided to get the train to Dublin, and hear what Aoife had to say.

Held in the intimate setting of the Dublin Contemporary, I have to say it was one of the most fascinating, and somewhat inspirational, hour that I've recently spent. Hearing Aoife talk passionately about her previous projects, was a great reminder that hard work and perseverance can lead to great things.

Having studied Visual Communications in Dublin, Aoife found herself in New York City for a Summer, and like any other recent graduate she figured that an internship would be the next step in beginning her career. So like the smart girl that she is, she simply picked up the phone book, and rang the person that she wanted to work with most, that would be famed designer, David Carson. From Carson's studio she made her way to Visionaire, the luxury, and highly coveted, arts and fashion publication, as well as other publications and advertising agency. For the following six years she oversaw the art direction of Visionaire, V Magazine, V Man and V Agency and worked on several special collaborations with renowned luxury brands, celebrities, fashion icons and photographic legends. In 2008, she became Creative Director of Teen Vogue, being nominated for an ASME award for General Excellence and won three categories of SPD awards along the way.

Its easy to see why she has become the successful woman that she is. In the brief hour that we spend in her company, she is charming and funny, and instantly likeable. Casually dressed in jeans and a shirt, she is the embodiment of New York easy chic. She talks about applying to Teen Vogue and the interview with Anna Wintour that followed, and anyone that has Mario Testino as their reference on their CV is pretty amazing in my book.

This year saw her leave Teen Vogue, to start her own creative agency, offering advertising, branding, and consultancy for the fashion, luxury and media industries. Along with her new venture, Aoife is working on publications for Rizzoli publishing house, as well as lecturing in Parson's School of Design.

At the end of the presentation there was a short Q&A, and I was lucky enough to be able to ask Aoife a question, and a pretty simple one too. I asked what advice she had for someone starting off their design career. Her reply was to simply intern, to assist, and to learn as much on the job experience as possible. She also said something important, which was "apply to the places where you would like to work, the place that you think is doing the best work". This is something I never thought of before, foolishly enough, I figured I would apply everywhere and hope someone would take me on, but, just as Aoife looked up David Carson in the phonebook, I too have decided to start with the best. Because, who better to learn from?

Last Saturday I was lucky enough to be invited to a talk by Irish Art Directer, Aoife Wasser (more on that later), held at the Dublin Contemporary. After the facinating talk, my mate, and fellow blogger, Joey (THE BUBBLE BOY) and I checked out the space.

I have to say I was more than impressed, and pleasantly surprised by the quality of work on display at the Dublin Contemporary. The building itself adds to the character of the space, and the varies mediums of work fill the building with a new lease of life.

It really does have everything. From photography, to instillation work, performance art, and some interactive art too, it really is a great collection, a solid and compressive body of Contemporary art.

The Dublin Contemporary runs until the end of this month, October 31st, so if you have not already been, I highly recommend a visit.

Yes, there has been a lot, and I mean A LOT, of minimalist movie posters hovering around the design blog scene this past year (Blame Olly Moss) but these Halloween inspired prints are particularly sweet.

Agency Creative Spark have produces six prints on their favourite scary films. The prints cost £10 each, with all profits raised going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, its an interesting collaboration between art, design and exercise, 3 areas which are not usually brought together, at least not in such an effective way like this.

The climbing wall was designed and developed by the renowned design studio Nendo Japanese architecture and equipped for one of the rooms in Tokyo fitness club Omotesando ILLOIHA.

At the weekend I was lucky enough to see The Irish Museum of Contemporary Art's New Living Art Exhibition held at Moxie Studios (Lad's Lane, off Baggot St.) The Show run until the 30th of October, and opens daily, 12-5pm.

My amazingly talented friend, Ciara Killalea, had two fabulous prints in the exhibition. They are part of her Inhabiting Space series. Ciara is one of those fabulous photographers that is able to capture a story, every time she clicks her camera, a true talent. And not to be bias, but she had the best work of the exhibition...

I highly recommend the exhibition, it has a rich and diverse collection of instillations, photography, moving imagery and some taxidermy. What more could you want from an exhibition?

So a few weeks back my amazingly talented friend, Ciara K, said she was working on an arts project and asked if I wanted to get involved. I said yes before she had finished asking the question. I knew if Ciara was involved, that the end result would be amazing.

The project is an online arts magazine, feature up and coming Irish Artists (all forms and medias). It will also have a consistent events guide (has anyone seen the Culture Fox website, its god awful).

Down the line, we are hoping to put the best of our content into print form, whether that is a book or a magazine, its to be decided.

The collaboration between legendary style icon Daphne Guinness and fine jeweller Shaun Leane took over four years to be realized. Named Contra Mundum (translated as Against the World), the armour-inspired gauntlet is made up of more than a thousand grams of gold and is set with over 5,000 pavé white diamonds.

Good as Gold...

I picked up this frame in the Somalia Shop a few weeks back, it was down the bottom of a bin and had no picture inside of it. What it did have however was a 50 cent price sticker, which was reason enough for me to buy it.

When I got home I flipped through old issues of i-D magazine I came across ‘Le Saut dans le Vide’ (Leap into the Void) by French artist Yves Klein. I love this image so much, the idea of free falling, and the pain that comes after it. It needed to be framed.

What I didn't Love however was the frame, so dark and clunky looking. Everytime I looked at the Black & White image itself, it felt to me so much more depressing.

Luckily I had some gold paint left over from my CHAIR, and it was all it look to give the frame a new lease of life. I just gave the frame one quick coat, using a sponge to apply the paint, so it wouldn't leave and brush strokes, just a stained effect.

I Love how it now looks on the Wall of Frame. It doesn't look dark or heavy, and the gold does what its meant to do, it frames the image, and doesn't subtract.

While the womenswear gets all the attention at LFW, its menswear shows are rarely reported on, which is a shame, because some of the most exciting shows of LFW have been for the boys.

Christopher Shannon's SS12 collection was a mix of his trademark sports and urban wear, mixed with contrasting patterns and colour palettes.

Like if the boys from Shameless when on a spree in Brown Thomas, I'd imagine this is what they'd come out with.

Nicola became my favourite Loud Girl when a reporter that had earlier insulted bandmate Sarah in his article, asked why she was being so grumpy during an interview... Nicola simply responded "Because I don't talk to cunts" and ever since then, a legend was born.

Noted for doing her own thing, Nicola is undoubtable the most fashion forward of the band, and has been a champion of you UK designers. She highlighed the dangers of Tanning salons in a BBC3 documentary, and gave gingers all over the country a new hero to aspire to...

Last night while performing in London's G-A-Y she continued her Urban Fairytale theme, with Repunzle like hair, and a great pair heels.

Nicola's album, Cinderella Eyes, was released Friday in Ireland, and on Monday in the UK. and it is very, VERY good! The lyrics are honest and refreshing, like a less crazed Lily Allen.

So I brought this is some second hand shop years ago for my Mam, only to find out that the record player I thought we had actually didn't exist. So it sat in the cupboard for years, until I stumbled across it, and thought it would make a cool wall hanging. Which it did, but you know me and my notions. I figured I could find a better use for it...

and since making my new chair in an effort to keep my room clean, I figured Id continue on with my new easy breezy beautiful lifestyle. Clear space, clear space and all that jazz. Mostly my work desk needed to be sorted out. Like most,(I hope) I do very little work on my work desk. Its more of a storage/junk space. Where I can empty my pockets, and keep the stuff that I have no use for as of yet, but always have that feeling, that maybe I might need it some day..

So I decided that all it would take to sort of my desk/life, was a bowl. I could have used one of the cereal bowls from the kitchen, but you know, why have a plain white bowl, when you can do something a little different?

So if you would like your very own Vinyl Bowl, all you need is an old record, doesn't have to be ABBA, and large oven safe bowl. Place the record above the bowl like so...

place a tinned can on top of the record. Like so...

put the bowl, the record and the can in the oven. Like so...

leave for about 5 minutes, then take it out and finish shaping, whilst still hot, and bendy. Like so...

Let it cool and harder for then minutes. Like so...

And finally, sort you work space out, and get you life in order! Like so... (this last part is easier said than done, but hey, its a start)

DIY Darren

So I don't know if I'm the only one that does this, (at least I hope Im not), my clothes live on the floor. I dont mean to disregard them so. But you know how it is, you come home from a long day, and putting your clothes away neatly is the last thing on your mind.

So I figured the only way to combat this problem of mine would be buying a chair. It sounds simple, but I figure if the clothes are not on the floor, and instead piled on a chair it would lessen the appearance of a typical male messy room. and there she is, in all her glory.

Except this chair in paticular isn't looking very glorious at all. I got the chair in my local Cancer Society Shop, it was a steal at just €4. And even though I hated the colour, I figured Id be able to fix it up somehow.

So this was my first job. Getting rid of the wine coloured frame. I didnt know what colour I would paint it, even at this stage, but white funiture is a little too west coast beach house for me, so I ramshacked my Dad's tool shed, to see what he had lying around.

and luckily I found a tin of Gold paint down the back of the shed. Not just gold paint, but anti rust gate paint, which Im pretty sure was not intended for wood, but it gave the chair this almost dirty looking finish, which I loved. The idea of a golden chair sounded so regal to me, so when this murky gold effect came out, I was delighted.

When I put the seat back on the frame, I liked the end look, black and gold is always a winning combination. Just ask Sam Sparro. But I knew it could be better. Just ask Sam Sparro. So I looked to my wardrobe for inspiration.

and inspiration is indeed what I found, in the form of an old shirt no less. Its actually not that old a shirt, I brought it a few weeks back in another of my favourite second hand shops in town, Mrs. Quinns, but it never really went with anything, or there was never really the right night out for a mustard paisley print shirt. Well, in Ennis anyways. It needed a new life.

and thats just what it got. By simply wrapping the shirt around the seat for the chair, I was able to see how it would look, and it looked great.

All I had to do then was staple the fabric on to the chair. and then nail the remaining fabric down after running out of staples. Simple.

ta-dah! the pin nails actually worked out quite well, they are a lot stronger than the staples, but not long enough to poke through the seat, it also kept the material in place, and I was able to get the seem of the shirt in the centre of the seat.

and there she is. my new chair - slash - clothes horse. Unfortunately I now have no excuse for having a messy room.

And here she is in her new home, the dark gold is a nice contrast with the pale blue wall, and I love the print on the chair, it is much more suited with a seat, than, lets say, on my back. The chair cost €4, while the shirt, from Zara by the way, was just €5. So a new chair for less than a tenner. Quite the bargain I'd say.

Paris Hilton's 55th Birthday!

Birthdays are a big thing in my family... Without fail on the day of mine, my sister's or my brother's birthday, we would be woken with breakfast in bed, followed by presents, followed by coming downstairs to find the house littered with balloons and banners. Every birthday. Every year. Without fail.

So when my father, Jacko, turned 55 last month, we decided to celebrate it in style, well, in what my family considers style anyways...

The week started with a family train ticket, Ennis to Dublin... Well, it was actually Limerick to Dublin on the train, we travelled by bus from Ennis to Limerick, because Irish Rail had leased out the 10.15 train to an entire private booking, to the VFI.

Yes,the Vintners Federation of Ireland, the people that are always complaining that the pub trade in Ireland is dying because us Irish are not living up to our binge drinking reputations, have enough money to charter a train for its members.

This meant that us commoners would have to endure a warm overcrowded bus, but thankfully it was a short journey.

Chamber of Horrors at The Wax Museum

A little annoyed we finally reached Heuston Station, and although my frugal (Cheap) mother insisted that it would be quicker to walk to the D4 Hotels in Ballsbrigde, we finally convinced her to just get in the taxi...

After checking in we headed back into town, and decided to see a few places that we would go us youngsters. It was agreeded that it was too wet for the Zoo, (seriously, I can't understand why tourists would chose to come here) so we settled on the Wax Museum, which has since been relocated across from Trinity College.

Naturally it is an attraction that loses its appeal the older you get, seeing the Simpsons aged 5 is a lot more exciting than seeing them at 23, surrounded by over excited you kids. Still, we put on an over enthusiastic face, mostly for my Mother's sake.

My younger brother and Dad go see the Ireland & Croatia friendly in the Aviva. Faced with the thoughts of a night of making small talk with my mother, I decided to buy us two tickets for Grease at The Grand Canal Theatre. As it turns out, we are there on the opening night, and the theatre is wedged with all sorts of Irish celebrity, the term being used very lightly.

Before heading to the Grand Canal we have a quick drink in a wine bar on the docks. As we look out upon the grey Dublin sky, and smirk at the panting ladies, soaking wet from taking part in a bootcamp workout/torture exercise, none other than Nation Treasure, and one time Presidential Candidate, Gay Byrne walks in to the wine bar.

This of course sets my mother off in a frenzy of questions. Is that him? Are you sure? Whats he doing he? Is that his wife? Hows my hair? My mother continues to stalk him through the window of the smoking area where we are perched, whilst I try to understand the appeal of old Gaybo. For my mother to meet with him would be a dream come true, like if I were to meet Kylie or Tilda, meeting Gay Byrne would be something my mother would never forget.

As we went to pay, I informed my Mam, now quivering like an 11 year old Beliber, that Gay and his wife, Kathleen, were sitting at the bar. The nerves kicked in. She decided to bail, and that it would be rude to interrupt the couple. I, like any good son, while respecting my mother's opinion, decide to have none of it, and gently cornered her between Gay and his missus...

"Gay, Im sorry to interrupt, but I would never forgive myself if I didn't say hello!" it was a pretty smooth opening line. Gay smiled, shook her hand, and thanked her, as did Kathleen. So my mother's evening/day/year was made, and I was left to pay the tab as she floated out the door.

When we took our seats in The Grand Canal, upper tier, cheap seats, great view, it became apparent that we were in the prime viewing seats, not for the stage, bit for the side stage private boxes. They slowly filled up with TV Gardeners, Eurovision Winners, Radio Presenters, and a handful of Fair City folk...

The show itself was great, great production, fun cast, great costumes. The lady of the hour, X Factor's Mary Byrne, stole the show, and the heart's of her audience, in her own hometown too.

Day three of our Jacko's Birthday celebration saw us venturing off to Galway. With more activities planned for the weekend, my Dad was giving Paris Hilton a run for her money, in the celebrations stakes.

Our first stop was Tynagh, outside of Loughrea, where the Tynagh Go-Karting racecourse kept us entertained for half an hour and countless laps. Unsurprisingly my 16 year old brother, being brought up on a diet of Fast & Furious films, and Grand Theft Auto, came in first place. His fastest lap was 5 seconds off the track's record of 57 seconds. I on the other hand adopted the strategy of Marge Simpson, Slow and Steady wins the race. It did not work.

From Tynagh we drove to Salthill. I say drove, the correct term would probably be 'BOMBIN IT'. My mother, still in the competitive mindframe from our afternoon of Go'Karting had thrown all regard for the speed limits as she tore down the duel carriage way at 140 Km/H as bewildered drivers zoomed past in confusion...

In Salthill there is only one thing to do. Well, on my agenda anyways, and that is Rollercoasters! And whether they liked it or not I had no regrets in bringing my entire family up on every carnival ride in the LeisureLand amusements.

After nearly 10 minutes of coaxing and insulting, I finally managed to get to younger brother strapped in beside me on the Slingshot... We got a video of us being flung into the air at 160 miles an hour, but its probably best that the internet doesn't see that...

After being thrown around in the air, we went off in search of food. You really work up an appetite being dangled mid air.

After a delicious meal we headed back home. I was exhaused form the past 3 days of activity, while my parents, were still raring to go. So Jacko's week long celebrations continued at our holiday home in Lahinch, I stay in Ennis for a bit of peace, and wondered at what point did I turn into Saffy, and my parents, somehow, into Eddie & Patsy?

But you know what they say, The Family that Rollercoasters Together, Stays Together...

As part of ABSOLUT Fringe 2011, Dublin based agency The Small Print enrolled a host of image makers (including Ben Newman, Dalek, Linda Brownlee, Niels Shoe Meulman, Rilla Alexander (Rinzen) and The London Police) to each customise an eight-foot tall Absolut bottle. The bottles are being exhibited in Dublin's South Studios until Monday September 12, but in case you can't make it to the show...

...The Small Print has sent us images of all the completed giant bottle designs, as well as some work in progress shots of the project taking shape in a big warehouse over the course of a week. While the idea of customising drinks bottles with art is by no means a new concept, these hand-adorned giant bottles look really great.

VHS Masterpieces!

Swiss artist Andy Denzler creates paintings that are designed to look like the fuzzy image of a paused VHS recording.

The oil paintings -- mostly portraits of people -- aim to reinterpret photography and film stills. Denzler told Wired.co.uk: "I'm pushing the boundaries and possibilities of abstract and photorealism. It's as if I've pressed the fast-forward on a video machine, then hit the pause button, so reality comes to a stand-still. I speed up and slow down the colours. What remains is a distorted moment -- classically painted, oil on canvas -- which, upon closer inspection is very abstract, but from distance looks real."

He first got into the technique in art school where he worked a lot with audio-visual gear. He said: "One day when I was experimenting with abstract composition, I saw colour fields appear on the canvas, like what you get with long exposure times on photography. The effect was as if something was hovering beneath the surface of the paint."

He has been honing the technique in both colour and black-and-white over the last 10 years. In the monochrome pieces, the effect resembles the "snow" of old black-and-white televisions from the 1960s.

According to Denzler, his main challenge is creating a "painting that describes the every day and the monstrous simultaneously" and the "believability of the image".

Great idea huh?

How a Rollercoaster is Made!

All of my friends know that when it comes to Theme Parks, Fun Fairs, Carnivals, I'm always the one this is nagging them to come along... I love the rush, the white-knuckle thrill, and yes, even the tacky dance music and flashing light...

I came across a really interesting article on ThemePark Tourist, about Thorpe Park's plans to build a new rollercoaster, The Swarm. Set in a post apocolypitic setting, the £18 Million coaster is set to make its debut in 2012.

From initial coaster design, to posters, to the logo, to set decorations, like the crashed helicopters and ambulances, it really is a fascinating process to see how a rollercoaster comes to life.

Little Brother

They say in advertising that you need to THINK BIG, but try telling that to the ad men (and women) at Channel 4, they've never been ones to follow the crowd...

Their latest reality series, Seven Dwarves, follows the lives of seven little people, during the Christmas panto season, a veritable Little Brother if you will.

So to prove that bigger is not always better, pint sized billboards have been erected around London to advertise the show. It may be small, but you can't deny its not effective. Which I a nice way to sum up a show about little people.

Seven Dwarves starts tonight, 16th of August, at 9PM on Channel 4.

So when I was in Edinburgh a few months back (how terrible is it that I cant even remember what month?) I was lucky enough to see the Eduardo Paolozzi exhibition, at the Museum of Modern Art, Paolozzi himself was born just outside Edinburgh, contrary to what his name may suggest...

Although he is most famously know for his sculpture works, Paolozzi played a vital role in the beginning days of the British Pop Art movement, with his own Pop Culture collage works, and most notable inspiring Richard Hamilton's collages...

At the Museum's giftshop there was a selection of Paolozzi postcards, so decided to buy the lot, I was unsure as to what I'd do with them, but I knew I wanted them...

And here they are, several months later, with a few frames from the Euro2 store, hanging on my wall, a subtle sulute to favourite time in art history...

“Neiman Marcus’ The Art of Fashion campaign features Drew Barrymore as the model. Shot by famed photographer, Norman Jean Roy, the photo shoot features the iconic Barrymore in high-concept imagery evoking the style of mid-century Hollywood studio portraiture.

The first Neiman Marcus Art of Fashion campaign appeared in 1994. At the time it was a revolutionary step for a retailer as the campaign was designed to feature cutting edge fashion, provocative photography and unique styling.
Today the Art of Fashion campaign adds a new chapter with its partnership with Drew Barrymore. Ms. Barrymore is featured wearing a variety of top designers from Neiman Marcus.

“The team at Neiman Marcus wanted to evolve the Art of Fashion by pairing up with a celebrated face and photographer. We felt that Drew Barrymore possessed not only the pedigree and glamour of old Hollywood, but also the confidence and spirit of the modern-day woman – much like Neiman Marcus itself. The project was a collaborative effort between Norman Jean Roy and Ms. Barrymore, and beautifully captures the essence of Neiman Marcus’ edits of the Fall collections,” said Eddie Nunns, Vice President of Neiman Marcus Brand Creative.

The Art of Fashion shoot will debut in The Book by Neiman Marcus and will appear in the September issues of Vanity Fair, Vogue and W. Additionally, Vanity Fair will feature a digital campaign of The Art of Fashion designed specifically for ipads.”
